I find myself talking about inflammation and anti-inflammatory foods a lot.  It’s a super interesting subject (well, it is to me, but I am not sure it makes me a good person to be stuck chatting with at a party) so I thought I should do a little focus on it to talk about what it means and why anti-inflammatory foods are awesome.

I am sure at some point in your life you have bumped your knee, cut your arm, or some variation of this.  At the point of your injury there is swelling which is your body’s response to the injury in sending immune activity and defenses.  This, of course, is a good thing when you cut or hurt yourself because it means your body is working to protect you from any bacteria entering the body and working to heal you quickly.

More recently, we have discovered that it is possible (and common) to have whole body inflammation which can be caused by stress, toxin exposure, and certain foods.  This long term, whole body inflammation has been linked to a range of not so great things.  The biggies that have been linked to chronic inflammation are heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and several cancers.

Now for the good news!! The foods you eat can make a huge impact on controlling inflammation.  As you may be expecting me to say, the best inflammation fighters happen to be fruits and vegetables (mostly veggies).  They contain powerful antioxidants that help flight inflammation.  They also contain lots of good fiber which is another factor that seems to fight inflammation.

Here are some awesome anti-inflammatory foods (obviously there are lots more, I am just scratching the surface here)

  • Green tea
  • Garlic
  • Avocado
  • Flaxseed
  • Hot peppers
  • Carrots
  • Almonds
  • Asparagus
  • Beets
  • Broccoli
  • Cantaloupe
  • Turmeric
