On our weekend excursion to Atlanta a few weekends ago, our lovely friends fed us a delicious yogurt concoction made with almond yogurt. I became quickly addicted to the idea and the flavor. As I have mentioned before, I have never been a huge fan of yogurt. The almond variety, however, was delicious and I couldn’t wait to search it out back home.
While they didn’t have the almond variety at my food store, they did have a soy variety that I picked up. I didn’t realize until I got home that it was plain but sweetened (I would have preferred plain and unsweetened) but I was just psyched they had it so I wasn’t about to complain.
So here is my Atlanta inspired yogurt, made with peaches of course. If you find unsweetened yogurt you may want to add some maple, honey, or dates for sweetness. I am going to keep an eye out for both the almond variety and any non-dairy unsweetened variety.
I chose to chop the peaches, honestly because I didn’t feel like having to clean anything more than a knife, but you could puree them in the blender or food processor for a smoother texture. I quite liked the bits in there myself.
In making this “flavored” yogurt yourself (rather than buying a peach flavor from the store) you don’t have to try to talk yourself into believing that the fruit in there counts as a serving of fruit (or is that just me who does that?), because you really are getting a good serving of fruit in here!! And this will likely contain less sugar than the flavored ones.
Health highlight of yogurt: Pretty much every time I see a list of healthy foods, like foods you should be eating, or the healthiest foods for breakfast, the list almost always lists yogurt. These days most everyone knows that probiotics=good. And yogurt is fermented using probiotics. Yogurt has been shown to improve your immune system, help to keep your weight in check, aid digestive functions, and even elongate your life!! (Some recent research is linking the consumption of fermented foods with a longer lifespan!) And yes, even though this is a non dairy yogurt you still get the same benefits!
1 cup Non-Dairy Yogurt (I used soy and it was sweetened, see note above)
3 fresh Peaches – minced
¼ cup Walnuts
½ teaspoon Cinnamon
- Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl
